The Cardinals took on Notre Dame in a one-on-one competition in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS -- A warm spring day of racing for the University of Louisville Rowing team was highlighted by a win by the First Varsity Four of Madeline Dodd, Evey Peplowski, Molly Gillikin, Eliza Wack and coxswain Izzy Hussey. The boat finished ten seconds ahead of the Irish boat for the win.

"We got a few athletes back for this race and had different lineups throughout," said Derek Copeland, UofL head coach. "We continue developing some areas of the race, and that will continue to grow. The Varsity 4+ claimed our first victory of the season, and they had a blast going fast. The 2V8+ found themselves in a battle and were able to utilize their sprint well at the end. This is something they focused on last week, so it is good to see their performance grow in that area."

It was the second outing of the 2021 season for the Cardinals, after hosting the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational. The boats faced choppy conditions, with a five-mph headwind throughout the day of racing.

"Our coxswains continue to step up and help each boat in their own way," said Copeland. "These results move us another rung or two further up that ladder. We will continue to find our fastest combinations over the next couple of weeks, put it together on the Mighty Ohio River, and see what we can do in mid-April at the Big 10 Invite."

The Cardinals are using the competition in training to face some of the top teams in the nation in their next outing at the Big Ten Invitational at Harsha Lake, Ohio April 17-18.
