Elveroth’s Late Goal Not Enough as Cardinals Fall to Wolfpack
September 27, 2019 | Men's Soccer
The Cards are now 4-2-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in ACC action
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Despite a late surge in the second half, the No. 17 University of Louisville men's soccer team could not overcome a pair of first-half NC State goals as they dropped a 2-1 decision at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium Friday night (Sept. 27).
The Cardinals fall to 4-2-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in ACC action. The Wolfpack improve to 5-2-1 and 2-1 in conference play.
The Cardinals' best scoring chance in the first half came in the 12th minute. Cherif Dieye sent a clean pass to Emil Elveroth who connected with the back of the net, but was ruled offside.
NC State took the lead in the 40th minute on a breakwaway goal by Iverson Brisma. The Wolfpack then doubled their lead with 45 seconds to go in the first half when Tyler Gabarra sent a shot into the upper left corner of the far post.
The Cards, who out-shot the Wolfpack 8-2 in the second half, cut their deficit in half in the 84th minute. A long pass from William Hirschman down the right side found Dieye, who sent a cross to Elveroth in the box. Elveroth then deposited the ball from the center of the box past Wolfpack goalkeeper.
UofL has one final chance to score the equalizer as the NC State keeper barely got a hand on Elijah Amo's shot with 1:43 to play in the game.
Between the posts, Jake Gelnovatch concluded the match with three saves.
The Cardinals are back in action Tuesday, October 1, as they welcome Belmont to Lynn Stadium for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
