April 10, 2018 | Women's Basketball
The Cardinals recorded three wins over Top 25 teams and went 7-0 in November.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -Â The 2017-18 University of Louisville women's basketball team will go down as one of the best in program history. They finished the year at 36-3, which marks the most wins, the fewest losses and the best winning percentage in school history. In the midst of a program-best 20-0 start, they reached No. 2 in the Associated Press poll, which marks their highest ranking in school history. The Cardinals also won the program's first ACC regular season title and the first ACC tournament title, marking the first time that they have swept conference regular season and tournament titles since 1984. On March 25, with a 76-43 win over Oregon State in Lexington, the Cards secured the program's third ever trip to the Final Four. Â
The season began with the Cards going a perfect 7-0 in the opening month of November. They won three games over Top 25 opponents, downed No. 5 Ohio State 95-90 in Columbus as Asia Durr scored a school-record 47 points and beat No. 10 Oregon to win their second preseason WNIT championship.
Nov. 10 – UofL opens season with 80-40 win over Southeast Missouri, all 11 players score in the win.
Nov. 12 – In front of nearly 10,000 fans and a national television audience, No. 9 Louisville downs No. 5 Ohio State in Columbus 95-90 in overtime. The win marked Louisville's first win over an AP top five school since they downed No. 1 Baylor, 82-81, in the 2013 NCAA Regional Semifinal. Prior, the Cards had lost 10 straight games against top five teams.
Nov. 12 – In the win over Ohio State, Asia Durr scored 47 points to set the school record previously held by Angel McCoughtry (43 vs. Providence, 2009). She scored 17 points in both the first half and second half and then erupted for 13 of the Cardinals' 15 points in overtime to seal the victory. She finished the game 16-of-29 from the floor, 9-of-15 from 3-point range and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Her nine 3-pointers tied the school record, set by Shoni Schimmel against Memphis in 2014. Her 47 points did not just eclipse the women's basketball single game scoring record, it also eclipsed the men's basketball single game scoring record, which is 45 points by Wes Unseld vs. Georgetown on Dec. 1, 1967. She was named ACC Player of the Week for the second time in her career following the record-breaking performance.
Nov. 16 – In the 74-49 win over No. 24 Michigan in the preseason WNIT semifinals, the Cards trailed at half, 37-32. They then limited the Wolverines to just four third quarter points and eight points in the fourth quarter for 12 second half points, which was just four off the school-record of eight points allowed in a half (8, Houston Baptist, 11/17/10). After Michigan shot 65 percent in the first half, they were limited to 19 percent shooting in second half, making just four field goals. UofL outscored Michigan 42-12 in the second half to win by 25.
Nov. 19 – Louisville claimed its second WNIT title in two tries with a 74-61 win over No. 10 Oregon. Myisha Hines-Allen was named WNIT MVP after scoring 17, 19 and 17 in the final three games of the tournament and finishing with two double-doubles.
Nov. 20 – Myisha Hines-Allen was named ACC Player of the Week for the sixth time after averaging 17.7 points and 10.0 rebounds, while shooting 61 percent from the floor, in WNIT wins over Toledo, No. 24 Michigan and No. 10 Oregon.
Nov. 24 – Louisville scored a program-record 115 points in the 115-51 win over Murray State. The previous high was 109 points vs. Appalachian State on Feb. 23, 1991. Their 47 field goals also set a program record. The 64-point margin of victory ranked sixth all-time in program history.
