Jennings scores second goal of the season for Louisville, which clinches No. 4 seed and first round bye in ACC Championship
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Izaiah Jennings scored his second goal of the season but it was not enough as the No. 17 University of Louisville men's soccer team closed the regular season with a 2-1 overtime loss at No. 1 Wake Forest on a rainy Friday night at Spry Stadium.
After Jennings delivered the first goal of the evening in the opening half, the Demon Deacons scored the equalizer midway through the second half before adding the clincher in the 97th minute of action. The Cardinals ended the regular season with an 8-4-3 record overall and a 4-2-2 mark in the ACC, while Wake Forest improved to 16-1-0 overall and 7-1-0 in the conference.
The Cardinals clinched the No. 4 seed and a first round bye in the 2018 ACC Championship. Louisville will host a quarterfinal match at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m., ET. The complete bracket for the ACC Championship will be released following the completion of the regular season on Saturday night.
Louisville opened the scoring in the 37th minute when Jennings received a pass from Pedro Fonseca and scored inside the near right post from 12 yards away for the 1-0 advantage. The assist was the first of the season for Fonseca.
The Cardinals maintained their lead into halftime and through the first 16 minutes of the second half before Aristotle Harris delivered the equalizer for the home side in the 62nd minute. Omir Fernandez sent a short crossing pass into the box to Harris, who directed it inside the right post for his fifth goal of the season.
The match remained even until the end of regulation and through the first six minutes of overtime before the Demon Deacons scored the clincher on a goal by Bruno Lapa. Wake Forest worked the ball across the attacking third of the field before Lapa delivered his 10th goal of the season with well-placed shots into the upper right corner. Justin McMaster and Isaiah Parente were credited with assists on the game-winner.
The Demon Deacons finished with a 14-3 advantage in shots, including a 5-1 edge in shots on goal. The hosts also had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
