Cards snap two-match losing streak with 5-2 win over Illinois State
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Illinois State 5-2 in the first match of a doubleheader at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on Thursday. The Cardinals (10-11) will take on Tennessee Tech at 6 p.m.
"This Illinois State team is a very dangerous team," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We struggled with them last year and they returned almost the exact same lineup. I knew that if we didn't play very well we could lose this match. I'm very proud of our guys that we came and were mentally tough and as the match went on, we just got better and better."
The Redbirds (7-10) gained an early edge when Andreas Boers and Jakub Eisner teamed to beat Louisville senior Jeffrey Brown and Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff 6-1. The Cards quickly responded with a win on court two as junior Sean Donohue and sophomore Courtney Lock bested Urh Krajnc Domiter and Egehan Sertkaya 6-0. The first point of the match came down to court three where freshmen George Hedley and Brandon Lancaster defeated Christoffer Greve and Dylan Steffens 6-4.
After playing doubles and the first set of singles outdoors, rain forced the match to move the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center indoor courts. Brown added to the Cards' lead with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Rodrigo Oliveira on court three. Hedley made the score 3-0 when he beat Krajnc Domiter 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. The match was decided on court five. Freshman Carlos Longhi Neto was down 4-1 to Boers in the first set and came back to win 6-4, he went on the take the second set 6-2 to clinch the win for Louisville.
At the No. 6 spot Steffens posted a 6-1, 7-5 win over Lock to put the Redbirds on the scoreboard. At the four-position, Morin-Kougoucheff bounced back from a 6-2 first-set loss to beat Eisner 6-4 in the second set. In the third set tiebreaker, Morin-Kougoucheff prevailed 10-8 to make the match score 5-1.
Illinois State picked up another point on court four, where Lancaster fell 6-3 to Greve in the first set, but rebounded with a7-6 win in the second. This time, it was the Redbirds who won the point with a 10-8 tiebreaker decision.
"I'm really proud of Carlos (Longhi Neto) for clinching the win as well as George (Hedley)playing the No. 1 position for the first time in his career," said Ecarma. "I thought Jeff (Brown) showed a lot of leadership."
