Men's Tennis Falls Short Against Duke

Brown and Donohue register singles wins
DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 5-2 to Duke in an ACC match at Duke's Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
Â
"To beat a historically elite program like Duke on the road you have to execute well on the close outs. We needed to go 4-for-4 and we only went 2-for-4," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "Our number one doubles team looked pretty good and would have probably won if it were not abandoned. Sean and Jeff both closed out their matches very well. Sean redirected his game plan and executed well. Jeff closed out playing aggressive tennis and hitting to correct targets. Alex was up a set and George was up 3-0 in the third set and did not capitalize."
Â
The Blue Devils took the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Freshmen George Hedley and Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff fell 6-0 to Daniel McCall and Jason Lapidus while junior Sean Donohue and sophomore Courtney Lock lost a 6-3 decision to Nicolas Alvarez and TJ Pura. Seniors Alex Gornet and Jeffrey Brown were leading Catalin Mateas and Vincent Lin 5-4 when the point was clinched.
Â
In singles action, Morin-Kougoucheff fell 6-4, 6-2 to 19th ranked Nicolas Alvarez at the No. 1 spot to make the score 2-0. At the three-spot, Hedley lost his first set 6-4 to Lin, but rebounded to take the second 6-1 before falling 6-3 in the third. The match was decided on court six where freshman Carlos Longhi Neto lost a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Ryan Dickerson.
Â
The Cards got on the scoreboard at the No. 5 position where Donohue overcame a 2-6 first-set loss to Josh Levin to win the next two sets 6-1, 6-1 making the score 4-1. Gornet fell 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) to Mateas at the two-spot. The match was concluded on court four when Brown outlasted Pura 5-7, 7-6(7-3), 1-0 (10-8) for the 5-2 final.
Â
Louisville (11-12, 0-7 ACC) will return to the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center for a doubleheader against NC State and Southern Illinois on April 3.
