Cards win doubles point, but fall 6-1 to the Blue Raiders
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 6-1 to host Middle Tennessee Wednesday evening at the Adams Tennis Complex.
"We won a big doubles point but they outplayed us in singles," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "They had a great crowd and they were loud. We did not have the composure to win enough close sets. We have a lot to learn before we go to Oregon Sunday."
The Cardinals (3-4) opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins on courts 1 and 3. Middle Tennessee gained an early edge when Gonzalo Morell and Ayed Zatar defeated Louisville's senior duo of Jeffrey Brown and Alex Gornet 6-3 at the No. 1 spot. Louisville evened the doubles tally at the No. 2 position where freshmen Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Christian Haushammer edged Gian Issa and Miguel Negre 7-6. The first point of the match came down to court three where junior Sean Donohue and sophomore Courtney Lock prevailed 7-6 over Luis Morillo Diaz and Dima Zyhmantovich.
In singles action, Middle Tennessee tied the match with a win on court six where Morillo Diaz beat Haushammer 6-4, 6-2. The Blue Raiders gained the lead when Issa defeated Lancaster 7-5, 6-3 at the four-spot. Negre's 6-3, 6-4 win over Lock made the score 3-1. The match was decided on court three where Louisville's Carlos Longhi Neto rebounded from a 6-2 first-set loss to Zatar Cordero to take the second set 6-3, fell 6-3 in the third set.
The remaining courts continued to play out their matches with the Blue Raiders picking up wins on courts one and two.
The Cardinals return to action on Sunday, Feb. 7 when they travel to Oregon.
