Brandon Lancaster picked two wins Friday
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Freshman Brandon Lancaster picked up a win and singles and doubles for the University of Louisville men's tennis team on the first day of the Purdue Fall Invitational Friday.
"Today was the first college tournament for these freshmen and it showed," said UofL assistant coach Jakob Gustafsson. "A lot of nervous tennis early on today, but as we settled in we got a small glimpse at the potential of these guys. Hopefully how we finished today can be the starting point for tomorrow. We need to learn and adjust on the fly. If we do we will have a strong second day."
The tournament opened with a round of singles. In Flight 'A' freshman Brandon Lancaster picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Tennessee's Jack Heslin. Fellow freshman George Hedley rebounded from a 6-1 loss in the first set to beat Ball State's Conner Andersen 6-3 in the second set, but Andersen prevailed with a 7-6(6) win in the third. Freshman Christian Haushammer fell 6-2, 7-6(3) to Southern Illinois' Michal Kianicka.
In Flight 'B' singles, freshman Brian Tsao lost to Dayton's Carsten Fisher 6-3, 6-2 in his first round.
In Flight 'A' doubles action, Lancaster and Tsao fell 8-6 to Christoph Drechsler and Arklon Huertas del Pino of Indianapolis, but rebounded to beat Tennessee Tech's Jorge Alfonzo and Guille Nicolas 8-4.
In Flight 'B' doubles, Hedley and Haushammer lost 8-6 to Purdue's Lucas Dages Mateus Silva and edged Marquette's Scott Christian and Gleb Sklyr 9-8(2).
The tournament will resume Saturday at 8 a.m.
