Cards pick up seven wins on day two
CARY, N.C. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team picked up seven wins on day two of the Duke James Bonk Invite Saturday at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
Â
Senior Alex Gornet won all of his matches in singles and doubles while sophomore Santiago Salazar registered two singles wins on the day. Both Gornet and Salazar will play in the consolation singles finals of their respective draws on Sunday.
Â
"Several positives for Cardinal tennis today," said UofL assistant coach Jakob Gustafsson. "It was nice to see our hard work off the court paying off with outlasting our opponents. Winning without playing your best tennis is what mental toughness is all about, so seeing Alex go 3-0 was a big positive. Our hero of the day was still Santiago with physically breaking his opponent down. We now need to do all we can to recover for a great final day of the tournament."
Â
Gornet and junior Sean Donohue gave the Cards their first win of the day with an 8-3 victory over NC State's Simon Norenius and Nick Horton in the doubles consolation semifinals of the Black Division.
Â
In singles action, Gornet registered a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Radford's Janken Thoen in the Blue Division consolation quarterfinals and went on to outlast North Carolina's Stuart DePaolo 6-7 (5), 6-7, 6-2 in the semifinals. Â
Â
In the White Division consolation draw, Salazar beat North Carolina's Chad Hoskins 7-5, 6-2 and Radford's Michiel Meekers 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-4 to reach Sunday's final. Also in White consolation draw, sophomore Courtney Lock bested Elon's Chris Humphreys 6-2, 7-6(2) , but fell 6-2, 6-2 to Old Dominion's Aziz Kijametovic in the semifinals.
Â
In the Black Division, Donohue fell to North Carolina's Blaine Boyden 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the main draw, but rebounded for a 6-2, 7-6(3) win over Wake Forest's Anthony Delcore.
Â
The tournament will conclude Sunday.
