Postgame Interviews: Daniel Johnson | Tim Kubel
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Daniel Johnson's first half goal was enough to lift the 18th-ranked Louisville men's soccer team to a 1-0 exhibition victory over Lipscomb on Saturday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Controlling the action throughout the opening 45 minutes, Louisville connected for the only goal of the night when Johnson (Duluth, Ga.) scored from 14 yards out in the 29th minute for the 1-0 lead. The scoring chance started when Lipscomb goalkeeper Micah Bledsoe turned away a shot from Louisville sophomore Tim Kubel (Stuttgart, Germany), who tracked down the rebound near the end line before sending a cross into the box. Johnson controlled the cross and scored into the open goal before Bledsoe could recover from his diving save on Kubel's earlier shot.
In the first of their three preseason matches, the Cardinals finished with a 9-2 advantage in shots in Saturday's first half, including a 6-0 edge on goal. Louisville used the second half to gain valuable experience and minutes for its second team, which managed to complete the shutout.
"I thought it was a good first game for us. For the first group, we played our way into it and when we started to get a rhythm, I felt like we had moments of being pretty dynamic," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "A couple of times, we had a bend but don't break look to us, but for tweaking a system like we have, I was very pleased. For the second group, I think there were a lot nerves and that's typical in the first game for so many young guys. Because of that, they didn't develop a lot of rhythm, but at the same time, they preserved the shutout in the second half, so it was a really good first game."
Junior goalkeeper Theo Jamilloux (Toulouse, France) played more than 59 minutes and finished with one save in the starting role, while redshirt freshman Casey Axman (Louisville, Ky.) added a save and worked the final 30+ minutes. Overall, Louisville finished with a 15-4 advantage in shots, highlighted by a 9-2 edge in shots on goal.
