Lancaster and Morin-Kougoucheff, Haushammer and Hedley reach doubles semifinals
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville doubles teams of Brandon Lancaster and Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Christian Haushammer and George Hedley have advanced to the semifinals of their respective divisions as the Cardinals completed day two of the Louisville Winter Invitational.
Â
"Having a UofL player in all of the semi-finals of the A and B division today is a good showing but honestly we feel a little disappointed," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "Even though all the players are freshmen, we were so very close to an all-Louisville final in both divisions. We had chances to win all four semis but faltered at critical times. We will all learn from this and be stronger for it. We have a chance to win both divisions in doubles tomorrow and we will turn all of our focus now on that."
Â
In flight 'A' doubles action, Lancaster and Morin-Kougoucheff teamed to beat Campbellsville's Vladyslav Ladygin and Alejandro Soriano in the quarterfinals to reach Sunday's semifinal match against Middle Tennessee's Gian Issa and Miguel Negre Fernandez.
Â
In the 'B' doubles division, Hedley and Haushammer defeated Lipscomb's Thais Minet and John Tougher 8-5 to advance to the semifinals where they will face SIU-Edwardsville's Jack Desse and Matthew Hutchinson Sunday morning.
Â
In singles action, the Cardinals had four players reach their respective division semifinals. In the 'A' division Morin-Kougoucheff defeated Kentucky's Jake Stefanik 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, but was edged 6-4, 7-6(5) by Middle Tennessee's Gian Issa. Lancaster picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over
Cambpellsville's Ladygin, but lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to Kentucky's Nils Ellefsen in the semifinals.
Â
In the 'B' division, Michael Quang beat Northwestern Ohio's Ronnie Myburgh 6-3, 6-3, but lost to Kentucky's Kevin Lai 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. Hedley also picked up a quarterfinal win with a 6-1, 6-4 decision against Middle Tennessee's Michael Apple, but lost in the semifinals to Butler's Adrian Mag 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
Â
The Louisville Winter Invitational will conclude Sunday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Doubles play will start at 9 a.m.
