Cards send four singles players, two doubles teams to quarterfinals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team advanced four players to the singles quarterfinals and two doubles teams to the quarterfinals on day one of the Louisville Winter Invitational Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

"It was a coming out moment for our freshman class," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "Chris, Brandon and George had one 'survival match' which they barely won. Sometimes those can be a mental test that you have to pass. Michael had two clean singles wins. This is one of the deepest fields that we have had at this tournament in years. The freshmen won 12 of their 15 on day one. They really want to prove that they are a special class."

In flight 'A' doubles action, the team of Brandon Lancaster and Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff defeated Murray State's Will True and David Hess 8-2 while Brian Tsao and Michael Quang fell 8-4 to Morehead's Nick Mercer and Sebastian Penaloza. The duo of Christian Haushammer and George Hedley beat Butler's Andres Maynez and Temilope Adelakun 8-2 in flight 'B.'

In flight 'A' singles action, Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff took a 7-6(2) first-set loss to Lipscomb's Alejandro Manzanares, but came back to win the next two sets 6-2, 7-6(3). He went on to beat Morehead's Babriel Ruiz 6-1, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals. Brandon Lancaster also picked up a pair of singles wins, defeating Morehead's Sebastian Penaloza 6-3, 6-2 and Northwestern Ohio's Thommy Johansson 6-7(5), 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals. Christian Haushammer picked up a 6-3, 7-5 win over SIU-Edwardville's Tristan Houle in his first round match, but fell 7-6(1), 6-3 to Lipscomb's Rob Mitchell.

In 'B' singles, Michael Quang registered two wins, beating Austin Peay's Evan Borowski 6-0, 6-1 and Butler's Alex Woldmoe 6-2, 6-3 to move to Saturday's quarterfinals. George Hedley also advance to the quarterfinals after beating Butler's Andres Maynez 0-6, 6-2, 6-1 and Lipscomb's Thais Minet 6-2, 6-0.

The tournament will continue Saturday with doubles starting at 10 a.m.
