Alex Gornet wins in round of 16 and quarterfinals
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – University of Louisville senior Alex Gornet advanced to the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Saturday.
In singles round of 16 action, Gornet lost his first set to Vanderbilt's Daniel Valent 6-1, but rebounded to take the next to sets 7-5, 7-5. He went on the beat Tennessee's Luis Valero 6-4, 6-0 to advance to Sunday's semifinals where he will face Indiana's Sam Monette.
Also playing in the round of 16, freshman Brandon Lancaster registered a 6-3, 6-1 win over Indiana's Elliott Yee before falling 7-5, 7-5 to Purdue's Ricky Medinilla in the quarterfinals.
"This is the first time in five years that we had two players in the final eight of the regionals," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "This tournament was a 'coming out' party for Brandon Lancaster as he introduced himself to our region. He was the only freshman in the final eight, I think. He is understanding more about court positioning and it is really helping him. The quarter-final match between Alex and Valent was hands-down the best singles match of the entire tournament the level of play was so high. Alex was down 1-6 1-3 and won 2 hours later. He showed guts and an incredible amount of mental toughness because it looked bleak quite a few times. He followed up that great result a little later by beating the top player of the home team Tennessee. If Alex keeps this level up, he will be extremely difficult to beat."
In a doubles quarterfinals match, the second-seeded, 35th-ranked duo of Gornet and Jeffrey Brown fell 8-6 to Indiana's Daniel Bednarczyk and Sam Monette.
Junior Sean Donohue and freshmen Michael Quang and Brian Tsao picked up consolation singles wins for the Cardinals. Donohue defeated Butler's Ari Gerstein 6-2, 6-3 while Quang bested Butler's Alex Waldmoe 6-4, 6-1 and Tsao beat Butler's Adria Mag 7-5, 5-7, 10-7.
