Gornet and Brown advance to doubles quarterfinals, Gornet, Lancaster reach singles round of 16
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Louisville's Alex Gornet and Jeffrey Brown advanced to the doubles quarterfinals while Gornet and Brandon Lancaster reached the round of 16 in singles as the Cards completed Friday's play in the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship.
Â
"Alex Gornet is having his usual good result in this tournament," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "As a sophomore, he and Albert Wagner made it to the semifinals in doubles and last season quarterfinals in doubles and semifinal in singles. He is in the quarterfinals again in doubles and round of 16 in singles. Freshman Brandon Lancaster got his second singles win in two days. Yee of Vandy was the 11th seed and a respected veteran player in the SEC. I am proud of his development and his ability to run the scouting report to perfection the last two sets. He has a bright future. Lastly, Gornet and Brown looked like the second seed of a 64 doubles team field. They are feeling very comfortable and the results show."
Â
Gornet and Brown, the overall No. 2 seed in the tournament, cruised through a pair of wins after receiving a first-round bye. The senior duo defeated Northern Kentucky's Mate Virag and Lukas Clemens 8-2 and then beat Andrew Watson and Shakeel Manji of Memphis by the same score to reach Saturday's quarterfinal match.
Â
In singles action, Gornet, the ninth-seeded player in the tournament, defeated Middle Tennessee State's Morillo Diaz 6-2, 6-2 to move to the round of 16 where Lancaster will join him after beating Vanderbilt's 11th-seeded Kristofer Yee 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Â
Senior Jeffrey Brown picked up a first-set 6-4 win, but Tennessee's Louis Valero prevailed 7-6, 6-4 in the next two sets. Freshman Michael Quang fell 6-4, 6-2 to Vanderbilt's Tate Allwardt.
Â
In the singles consolation draw, sophomore Santiago Salazar defeated IUPUI's Nader Calero 6-2, 6-4 while sophomore Courtney Lock beat Middle Tennessee's Miguel Negre Fernandez 1-6, 7-5, 11-9. Freshman Brian Tsao fell 6-2, 6-4 to Vanderbilt's Rhys Johnson and junior Sean Donohue lost Eastern Kentucky's Florian Graskamp 6-4, 2-6, 10-5. Â
