Early Goal Lifts Saint Louis Past No. 5 Louisville
September 10, 2014 | Men's Soccer

Freshman Tim Kubel had two of the Cardinals' 11 shots in Tuesday's loss at SLU.
ST. LOUIS - Despite dominating much of the action, the fifth-ranked Louisville men's soccer team allowed an early goal and never found the equalizer in a 1-0 road loss to Saint Louis on a rainy Tuesday night at Hermann Stadium.
In a match delayed 30 minutes due to thunderstorms moving through the area, the Billikens (3-1) struck for the only goal of the night when Tyler David connected on a header off a corner kick from Marco Heskamp in the 13th minute. It was the first goal of the season allowed by the Cardinals (1-1-1) ending a stretch of more than 212 minutes (212:47 overall) of shutout work.
"I thought tonight was almost a duplication of our last game (against Cornell), but the only difference was we gave up a restart goal," Louisville head coach Ken Lolla said following the match. "Having dominated long stretches of the game, we were very good up to the final third, but we never had the urgency to score a goal or make the difference in the game. Obviously, we're still learning lessons and we a long way to go to grow as a team and figure it out."
The Cardinals certainly had their chances to pull even on the scoreboard finishing with an 11-4 advantage in shots, including a dominating 7-0 edge in the second half. However, only two of Louisville's attempts were on-goal while numerous other opportunities inside the SLU third of the field ended without shots.
Senior goalkeeper Joachim Ball (Villingen-Schwenninge, Germany) turned away two of the three shots on-goal he faced in the match, while the Billikens' Sascha Otte had a pair of saves in the win. The Cardinals finished with an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks with seven of those chances coming in the final 45 minutes.
Up next, No. 5 Louisville returns home to Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium for the program's ACC opener against Duke on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., ET.
