LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's basketball head coach Jeff Walz is enjoying a busy summer that is far from over.
On Tuesday, Walz met with the media to discuss the upcoming 2014-15 season that includes Louisville's inaugural year in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He also spoke briefly about the challenges Louisville's in-conference schedule presents, claiming that the ACC is "top to bottom, without a doubt, the best league in the country." Including Louisville, the ACC had five schools ranked in the top 25 in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll.
With the departure of All-American Shoni Schimmel and talented veterans Tia Gibbs, Antonita Slaughter, and Asia Taylor, the head coach reviewed Louisville's five-member class of incoming freshmen: Myisha Hines-Allen, Sydney Brackemyre, Mariya Moore, Arica Carter, and Ariana Freeman. Both Hines-Allen and Moore are 2014 McDonald's All-Americans.
Walz continues his busy travel schedule at the end of the week, as he and his family are traveling to Phoenix, Ariz., for the 2014 WNBA All-Star Game on July 19. Former players Angel McCoughtry and Schimmel each were named starters for the WNBA's Eastern Conference early last week.
Toward the end of the month, both Walz and Moore are heading to Colorado Springs, Colo., for the FIBA Americas U-18 Championship at the Olympic Training Center from Aug. 6-10. Walz is serving as an assistant on the coaching staff, while Moore secured one of the team's 12 roster spots.
