Rowing Finishes Busy Opening Day at NCAA Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The No. 18 Louisville rowing team opened its first ever appearance at the NCAA Championship with all three boats qualifying for the C/D semifinals during the opening day of competition on Friday at Eagle Creek Park.
The Cardinals' varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four crews competed in morning heat races and afternoon repechage races to solidify their positions for Saturday's semifinal action. Louisville's varsity four crew of Chiara Ponko (coxswain), Paula Gollnick, Kylie Noltemeyer, Kara Savegnago and Maddy Staubitz raced to a third-place finish in Heat 3 before closing its day with a fourth-place result in Repechage 1.
Following a fifth-place finish in the Heat 1, Louisville's varsity eight boat with Andrea Zorn (coxswain), Elise Valantine, Lucy Wilshier, Morgan Dunham, Hannah Ritter, Darya Marchanka, Amanda Zalno, Jami Montesano and Sam Sinnett added a fifth-place finish in Repechage 1 later in the day. And the second varsity eight crew of Sophie St. Martin (coxswain), Abbie Wade, Amy Van Syoc, Lizzie DeVries, Cynthia Doyle, Kylen Pattermann, Hanna Spittel, Marissa Thalen and Katie Nord earned a fourth-place finish in Heat 2 during the morning and then added a fourth-place result in Repechage 1.
"It's easy to get greedy when you get to this event, but today was a good day and we competed well," said Louisville head coach Derek Copeland. "We will still have a good shot at solidifying our position at this championship and adding to the foundation of the future of this program. We want to compete with the programs that earned at-large invitations and our goal for Saturday to advance to the C finals."
Saturday's schedule for the Cardinals will begin at 8:30 a.m., ET with the varsity eight C/D semifinal followed by the second varsity eight C/D semifinal at 9:10 a.m. The last race of the morning for Louisville will be the varsity four C/D semifinal at 10 a.m.
