LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Racing in front of the home fans the only time this season, the Louisville rowing team hosted a fun-filled day along the Ohio River with Saturday's eighth annual Red & Black Regatta at the G. Garvin Brown III Rowing Center.
On a cool and breezy fall morning in downtown Louisville, head coach Derek Copeland started event on Waterfront Park with a welcome introduction before the Cardinals' intra-squad scrimmage races. Following the racing, the Louisville rowers and coaching staff participated in a cookout with fans and supporters.
During the opening introductions, Copeland also announced the selection of senior Jami Montesano (Dayton, Ohio) as team captain for the 2014-15 season. Montesano spent most of her junior season in the Cardinals' varsity eight boat helping that crew advance to the C final at the 2014 NCAA Championship. During each of her first two seasons in Louisville, she rowed in Louisville's second varsity eight boat.
"This is something that Derek and I had talked about over the summer and he challenged me to step into that position. I wasn't sure if I'd get that opportunity or not, but I knew had a chance to earn consideration for it," said Montesano. "When he told me, I was excited because this is what I've been working for. For me, it's leading by example, especially for all of the young rowers on the team. We expect this group to reach its highest potential and I see us not only returning to the NCAA Championship, but we can finish among the top 15 crews in the country."
Along with the action on the water, fans were also entertained off the water by the Cardinal Pride Pep Band and spirit squads, while raffle drawings were also held throughout the day.
Up next, the Louisville rowing team will continue its fall schedule at the Head of the Hooch regatta on Nov. 1 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
