LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville men's soccer team returned to its winning ways on Tuesday night with a 2-1 victory over visiting Florida Gulf Coast at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Behind first half goals from junior Ben Strong and freshman Tim Kubel, the Cardinals (6-5-1) halted their four-match losing streak in the first of a five-game homestand. The loss ended a three-match winning streak for the Eagles (4-5-3), who played their second straight road game in the Commonwealth after a win on Sunday at Northern Kentucky.
"It's good to win. Florida Gulf Coast is a very good team. They've been in every game and played some very good teams -- outplayed a lot of good teams and haven't necessarily gotten [the] result," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "To get a win against them at this point in the season for us is very good. We're encouraged by it."
Strong (Mendham, N.J.) started the scoring in the 10th minute on Tuesday when he delivered a shot inside the left post from the center of the box following a cross from the left side from sophomore Andrew Brody (Orlando, Fla.) for the 1-0 Louisville lead. The goal for Strong was his team-leading fifth of the season, while the assist for Brody was his second of the year.
"We talk about getting the first goal in every game and I thought we did a good job of coming out strong and just putting it away," said Strong. "We knew they were going to be a very technical team, so we just needed to get numbers behind the ball and then offensively find the ball, get spots. I think we did a good job of fighting."
The Cardinals pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 40th minute when Kubel (Stuttgart, Germany) converted on a penalty kick for his fourth goal of the year. Less than four minutes later, the Eagles answered with their own PK as Isaiah Madrid converted in the 44th minute to cut the Louisville advantage to 2-1 entering the halftime break.
However, that one-goal cushion was enough as the Eagles delivered just one shot on goal in the final 45 minutes of the match. Overall, Louisville finished with a 12-9 edge in shots, including a 5-3 advantage on goal. The Cardinals also had a 6-2 edge in corner kick chances.
Up next, Louisville will return to ACC action with a pivotal Atlantic Division matchup against second-ranked Syracuse on Friday at 7:30 p.m., ET. The Orange, who sits atop the division standings, will be the third opponent this season ranked in the top five nationally to challenge the Cardinals at Lynn Stadium.
