PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The University of Louisville track and field teams embark on the final BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championship this weekend, as the squads compete in the three-day event on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J.
Competition at the Bauer Track and Field Complex begins on Friday, May 3, with the multi-events and throwing events. The meet continues on Saturday at 11 a.m. with a full slate of events, and concludes on Sunday. Live results will be available on www.BIGEAST.org.
Louisville's women's team is in search of its sixth-straight outdoor title, an unprecedented feat in conference history, while the men's team will be attempting to capture its second outdoor crown in school history.
The women's team returns two of its individual champions from a season ago in Michelle Kinsella, who won the high jump title, and hammer throw champion Amashi Kendall. Kinsella currently ranks first in the conference in the event after clearing 1.85m/6-7.50, and Kendall is third in the BIG EAST in her respective event.
Louisville opens the championships solely with the men's and women's hammer throw events on Friday. The men's team has four throwers who rank in the top 10 in the conference in the event, while the women populate rankings 3-5.
Saturday's schedule features events on the track in addition to field events. The Cardinals' men's throwers start the day in the shot put at 11 a.m., with pair of jumps - the women's long jump and women's pole vault - events taking place early in the day. Brad Vivace, currently ranked second in the shot put, is one of four throwers in the top eight in the discipline in the BIG EAST.
The first track event comes at 1:30 p.m., with the women's 1,500m trials, followed by the men's section.
Calvin Arsenault is set to run in two events, beginning with the 110m hurdles trials at 2:15 p.m. followed by the 400m hurdles trials at 4:25 p.m. Arsenault holds the fastest time in the league in the intermediates and is sixth in the shorter event. Margret Harris, another standout sprinter, has the eighth-fastest 100m time in the conference and takes part in the trials at 3 p.m.
The Cardinals' concluding events on day two include the men's high jump, which Chrisjaan Smith ranks second in the league in the discipline, and the men's and women's 3,000m steeplechase and 10,000m events. Mattias Wolter has the quickest time in the steeplechase in the conference and a top-10 mark in the country, with newcomer Benadate Cheruiyot ranking ninth in the women's event. In the men's 10,000m, Ernest Kibet (first) and Tyler Byrne (eighth) hold top-10 conference times in the discipline.
Day three begins with two men's field events - the pole vault and discus - before the men's 4x100m relay team takes the track at 11:15 a.m. The rest of the track events, except the 5,000m and relays, consist of finals.
The only other field events Louisville will be competing for the duration of the day consist of the women's discus and high jump events.
