Seventeen University of Louisville track and field student-athletes have earned a bid to compete at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Rounds, the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced Thursday.
The event runs from May 23-25 at North Carolina A&T's Irwin Belk Track, inside of Aggie Stadium, in Greensboro, N.C. Tickets for the meet are currently on sale, and all seating is general admission. Will-call orders may be picked up at the Sullivan Street ticket booths beginning on May 23. Tickets can be purchased by calling the NC A&T ticket office at (336) 334-7749. There will be no online purchasing.
Louisville's men's team will send nine student-athletes, led by Mattias Wolter. The junior ranks fourth in the region in the 3,000m steeplechase with a career-best time of 8:43.73, which he achieved at the Stanford Invitational. Sam Bombaugh also holds a top-15 position in his event, checking in at No. 13 in the hammer throw. He broke the 20-year-old school record earlier this season, registering a mark of 62.94m/206-6 in the event. The junior has won three BIG EAST event titles this year, capturing the indoor weight throw and shot put titles and the outdoor hammer throw crown.
Along with Chrisjaan Smith, who earned a spot in the high jump competition and holds the fourth-best freshman mark in the region, others making the trip to Greensboro, N.C. consist of Calvin Arsenault (400m hurdles), Tyler Byrne (10,000m), Brad Vivace (shot put), Steve Wade (discus), Nils Westrich (hammer throw), and Sebastian Lenz (hammer throw).
On the women's side, eight student-athletes make up the nine entries. Amashi Kendall earned spots in the discus and shot put competitions and is currently ranked in the top 15 in both. Kendall, who won the BIG EAST discus title, has the eighth-best mark in the discus and the 11th-best throw in the shot put. Michelle Kinsella, who won the BIG EAST indoor title this season, is currently ranked third in the region in the high jump. Last year, she tied for sixth overall in the event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships for first team All-America honors.
Margret Harris, who earned a bid in the 100m, is one of two track athletes on the women's side earning a trip to North Carolina. Benadate Cheruiyot, the other, is slated to compete in the 3,000m steeplechase. Others who secured spots are Liberty Slinden (shot put), Hannah Baker (discus), Patrice Gates (hammer throw), and Caitlin Gilmore (hammer throw).
Each individual event group in Greensboro will consist of 48 athletes, with 24 teams in each of the relays. The top-12 individuals in each event from Greensboro and the 12 in each event from Austin, Texas - site of the West Preliminary Rounds - will comprise the 24 athlete and relay team fields that will compete at Oregon University's Hayward Field from June 5-8 for the national title.
