BLACKSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Sebastian Stiefelmeyer's No. 1 singles win over Amerigo Contini gave the University of Louisville men's tennis team a 4-3 win over host Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 8-6 on the season.
"For this team of freshmen and sophomores to win here is special. They showed flashes of their potential like they did against North Carolina and Boise State. We have now won four of the last five and our confidence is growing," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "I think the last 12 years almost every match went down to the last court 4-3. We won all our matches at Bass-Rudd and they won them all in Blacksburg. Even the great `Fabulous Four' years and the four years in the Gustafsson,Radman, Clark era we lost here every time."
The Hokies (6-3) swept doubles to take the first point of the match. Louisville's 31st ranked duo of Alex Gornet and Albert Wagner fell 8-3 to No. 11 Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini at the top seed. Austin Siegel and Jeffrey Brown lost 8-3 to Trpimirk Kujundzic and Marko Lovrinovic to clinch the point on court three. The tandem of Stiefelmeyer and Van Damrongsri was edged 8-7 by Hunter Koontz and Lucas Oliveira at the two-spot.
In singles, Virginia Tech took at 2-0 lead when Andreas Bjerrehus defeated Wagner 6-3, 6-3at No. 2. Gornet put the Cards on the scoreboard with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Joao Monteiro at the six-spot. Lucas Oliveira defeated Michael Lippens 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 to give the Hokies a 3-1 lead. Louisville answered at No. 3 where Chris Simich beat Koontz 7-6 (6), 7-5.
