LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Shoni Schimmel scored a season-high 21 points to lead No. 13/15 Louisville to a 66-57 overtime win over Rutgers on Tuesday night in the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals outscored the Scarlet Knights 14-5 in the overtime period to seal the victory.
Monique Reid added 18 points while Antonita Slaughter and Bria Smith each added 10 points. Erica Wheeler led Rutgers with 18 points.
Slaughter and Sara Hammond drained back-to-back 3-pointers to open overtime period. Louisville scored the first nine points in overtime before Precious Person scored a layup with 34 seconds. Wheeler then hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to six with 14 seconds remaining. Schimmel hit two free throws and Reid hit one foul shot in the final seconds for a nine point lead.
The Scarlet Knights built an 11-point lead (26-37) with 17:22 left. Louisville went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to four with 14:18 remaining. Benijah Laney hit a 3-pointer to take a 35-42 lead on the next possession. The Cards took the first lead of the second half when Reid hit a layup with 8:54 left to play.
Wheeler scored on a layup with 1:50 remaining to take a 49-48 lead. Smith then hit two free throws to give the Cards a one point lead with 56 seconds remaining. Syessence Davis hit a 3-pointer with 27 seconds remaining to take a 52-50 lead.
Schimmel nailed a jumper with six seconds left in regulation to force a 52-all tie that carried into overtime. Reid stole the ball on the inbounds play but the Cardinals were unable to score, forcing overtime.
Louisville finished the game shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from behind the arc. Rutgers finished the game shooting the game 47.1 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from behind the arc. Rutgers outrebounded the Cardinals 31-28. The Cardinals scored 23 points off the Scarlet Knights 25 turnovers.
The Cardinals will be back on the road Saturday, Jan. 12 against Providence at 2 p.m.
