
No. 15 Louisville Tops Providence, 70-62

Shoni Schimmel and Bria Smith scored 17 points each Saturday to pace No. 15 Louisville to a 70-62 Big East victory over Providence. Antonita Slaughter added 12 points and Monique Reid 11 for the Cardinals (14-3, 2-1). Tori Rule 15 scored 20 points for Providence (5-10, 0-2).
The Friars tied the score for the third time at nine with 14:28 remaining in the first half. The Cardinals then went on a 19-0 run to take a 28-9 lead with 8:32 left in the half. Schimmel hit a 3-pointer with 3:52 remaining to give the Cards its largest lead of the game at 34-14.
Providence then used a 10-4 run to cut the lead to 38-24 at the break. Louisville shot 64 percent (16 of 25) in the first half while holding Providence to 26.5 percent shooting.
The Friars came out strong in the second half, using an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 40-33 in the first three minutes. The Cardinals responded with a 10-0 run capped by a three point play by Smith to take a 50-33 lead at the 11:34 mark.
Louisville led 58-43 with 6:07 remaining after a layup by Reid, but a steal and layup by Evi Iiskola started a 15-5 run that brought the Friars to within 63-58 at the 1:26 mark.
Two free throws apiece by Schimmel and Smith and a three-point play by Smith secured the e lead down the stretch for Louisville, which overcame a season-high 26 turnovers.
The Cardinals finished the game shooting 51.9 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc. Providence finished the game shooting 33.9 percent from the field and 26.3 from behind the arc. Both teams finished with 40 rebounds.
Louisville will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 15 against No. 2/3 UConn at 9:00 p.m. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
