
No. 11 Cardinals Fall Short To DePaul, 86-80

CHICAGO - Monique Reid scored a season-high 25 points but it was not enough as the Cardinals fell 86-80 Saturday in the Big East opener in McGrath-Phillips Arena. Shoni Schimmel scored 19, Antonita Slaughter scored 14 points and Bria Smith had 11 points and nine rebounds. Anna Martin led the Blue Demons with 22 points and Brittany Hrynko had 21 points and seven assists.
DePaul started the second half on fire, building a 70-56 lead with 9:37 left in the game. Louisville (12-3, 0-1) trailed 80-70 with 4:52 remaining before Shoni Schimmel hit two 3-pointers. Reid's layup drew the Cardinals within 80-78.
Martin made a layup on the next possession. The next Cardinal possession was a missed layup by Jude Schimmel and Reid grabbed the rebound and went up for a layup but the officials called a jump ball, giving possession to the Blue Demons. Hrynko hit four free throws for DePaul to seal the win in the final seconds.
The game was tightly contested in the first half. DePaul kept a five point lead for much of the first half and led by seven at the 3:58 mark. Louisville then used a 12-4 run to close out the half for a 42-41 lead at the half.
Louisville finished the game shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from behind the arc. DePaul shot 49.3 percent for the game and 40.9 percent from behind the arc. Louisville outrebounded DePaul 45-32.
The Cardinals will host Rutgers on Tuesday, Jan. 8 in the KFC Yum! Center at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
