LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Following a win to open the cross country season, University of Louisville junior Tyler Byrne was named BIG EAST Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, league officials announced Tuesday afternoon.
Byrne, the conference's first men's award recipient this season, garnered the honor for the second time in his career.
The Georgetown, Ind., native captured his second career Mid-America Opener title Saturday morning by racing to a time of 17:53.16 in the 6K. Byrne, who won the event title last year, secured his third cross country victory as a Cardinal, and helped guide the Louisville men's squad to a 19-point win over Evansville for the team title. Despite the hot and humid conditions, Byrne's mark was 37 seconds faster than his previous collegiate best.
Louisville is idle this week and returns to competition on Sept. 15 at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. The meet will be held at Winthrop Coliseum and Farm on the University's campus, with the men's 8K starting at 9 a.m. and the women's 5K beginning at 9:45 a.m.
