LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore midfielders Dylan Mares and Will Vitalis each had goals to lead the way as the Louisville men's soccer team earned a dominating 3-0 victory over visiting DePaul on Wednesday night at Cardinal Park.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 6-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in BIG EAST Conference action, while the Blue Demons dropped to 3-7-1 on the season and 0-3-0 in league action.
Louisville gained command early in Wednesday's match when Mares took the ball on a 1-on-2 breakaway, beat a defender to the middle of the field and scored past a charging Eric Sorby in goal for DePaul in the 19th minute. The goal for Mares was his third of the season.
Less than six minutes later, the Cardinals pushed their lead to 2-0 when Vitalis took a crossing pass inside the 18 and scored inside the right post in the 26th minute for his second goal of the season. Ryan Smith and Paolo DelPiccolo were credited with assists on the goal.
After carrying that two-goal lead into the halftime break, the Cardinals' final tally of the night came on an own goal by the Blue Demons in the 84th minute.
Overall, Louisville finished with a dominating 22-1 advantage in shots, including a 16-1 margin in shots on-goal. The Cardinals also had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
In goal, Mike Mauro needed just one save to earn his second shutout of the season for the Cardinals, while Sorby turned away 12 shots in the loss.
Up next, Louisville returns to the road for a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Syracuse on Saturday at 7 p.m., ET.
