LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After being idle for a week, the University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete in Annapolis, Md., on Saturday, Sept. 17, with the men racing in the Navy Invitational at 11 a.m., and the women taking part in the Salty Dog Invitational at 11:30 a.m.
Both races will be held at Navy's cross country course, the USNA Golf Club.
The Cardinal men enter the race ranked No. 19 nationally - the best ranking in the race - in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the group's highest ranking since winning the BIG EAST title in 2007. Eastern Kentucky, also making an appearance, is slotted 28th nationally on the men's side. Regionally, the Cardinals are ranked No. 2 in the Southeast.
In the season-opener, sophomore Tyler Byrne's individual title led the men to capture the team title at Evansville's Mid-America Opener on Sept. 3. Byrne earned his first career victory with a time of 18:30 in the 6K. Redshirt junior Gordon Dooley took runner-up honors with a time of 18:44, and sophomore Mattias Wolter placed fourth in 18:54.
Last year, the men placed second at the race to Navy, which won the team competition by three points.
On the women's side, the squad is coming off a second-place finish at the Mid-America Opener. Freshman Madie Davidson led the team with a runner-up finish, completing the 4K course in 14:57. Classmate Michelle Molodynia also posted a top-10 finish, coming in eighth at 15:30.
At the meet last season, the Cardinal women placed fifth.
