TAMPA, Fla. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated VCU 5-2 Saturday in a neutral match in Tampa, Fla. The Cardinals improve to 11-10, while the Rams drop to 18-4 on the season.
Louisville used wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to take the first point of the match. VCU's Max Wennakoski and Filip Svensson defeated Alejandro Calligari and Robert Hall 8-5 at No. 2, but the Cards rebounded with Simon Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk's 8-5 win over Tim Johannse and Antoine Baroz at the top seed. Austen Childs and Adam Donaldson sealed the doubles point by beating Alejandro Argente and Jordan Dyke 8-6 at the three spot.
"Our doubles play has continued to improve since we shook up the lineup a few weeks ago," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Austen (Childs) and Adam (Donaldson) clinched the doubles point for us, I think Adam's confidence is really starting to grow with each match."
In singles, Simon Childs quickly gave the Cards a 2-0 lead by beating Baroz 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. Hall added another point with his 6-1, 6-0 decision over Camill Salomon at No. 4.
VCU got on the scoreboard at the No. 5 spot where Argente defeated Calligari 6-2, 6-4. Wennakoski's 6-1, 7-6(8-6) on court No. 2 pulled the Rams within one point at 3-2.

"Simon an Robert won quickly in singles, then it took almost an hour before the next point was scored by VCU," said Ecarma. "We were up 3-2 when Andrew (Carter) clinched the match for us. I was happy for Andrew, he really cam through for us today. Robert (Hall) is putting is foot on the gas regarding his singles play and is playing at a high level right now. Simon (Childs) has won three matches in a row, which has helped his confidence. Austen (Childs) continues to do what he has been doing all along - winning big."
The Cardinals (11-10) will face host USF Sunday at noon.
"We have to rehydrate and take our game to a different level tomorrow," said Ecarma. "We're going face a strong USF team on their home court."
