TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated BIG EAST opponent South Florida 5-2 Sunday at the USF Varsity Courts. The Cardinals improve to 12-10 on the season.
"Winning the doubles point helped us tremendously," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "This time Robert (Hall) and Ale (Calligari) got a win with Adam (Donaldson) and Austen (Childs). Simon and Viktor gave us singles points and our resident `clincher,' Robert Hall, did his job to finish the match. Austen gave us a bonus point in yet another battle today. Our momentum is building."
Louisville took an early lead by gaining the doubles point with victories on courts 2 and 3. USF's Lucas Jovita and Jamal Adderley struck first with an 8-3 win over Simon Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk. The Cards responded quickly with two wins. The duo of Austen Childs and Adam Donaldson defeated Wael Kilani and Federico Sabogal 8-1 at the three-spot and Hall and Calligari beat Romain Deridder and Yannick Yoshizawa 8-4 at No. 2.
Simon Childs, No. 117 in the ITA singles rankings, added to the lead with his 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3. Maksimcuk, No. 92 in the nation, defeated Kilaini 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 to put the Cards up 3-0. Sebastian Hagn put the Bulls on the board by beating Andrew Carter 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot. Hall clinched the win at No. 5 with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard.
After the match was decided, Federico Sabogal defeated Alejandro Calligari 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 on court 4 to make the score 4-2. Louisville's 13th ranked Austen Childs ended the day with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 73 Jovita on court 1.
The 33rd ranked Cardinals are back in action on April 6 when they travel to No. 35 Wake Forest.
