The No. 34 University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 4-3 to No. 11 Georgia Wednesday afternoon in Athens, Ga. The Cardinals fall to 10-10 on the season as Georgia improves to 14-3.
"To see so many teams celebrating after they beat us is tough," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We win No. 3 doubles solidly and were leading in both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and lose the doubles point."
The Cardinals dropped the doubles point after leading off the day winning the No. 3 spot as Austen Childs and Adam Donaldson defeated the No. 47 Georgia pair of Drake Bernstein and Wil Spencer 8-3. The Bulldogs prevailed in the next two matches as Alejandro Calligari and Robert Hall fell to the No. 32 ranked team of Sadio Doumbia and Ignacio Taboada 8-5. UGA clinched the doubles point in the No. 1 spot as Simon Childs and Maksimcuk dropped a hard fought match to the No. 10 ranked duo of Javier Garrapiz and Hernus Pieters 9-7.
"Austen Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk dominate two great players and Simon Childs wins the third point to put the focus on Hall's court for the win," said Ecarma. "He wins the first set and looked in control, but lost a heartbreaker. We get our first rest break in three months next week and will use this time to reload our confidence."
Louisville evened the score during the singles matches in the No. 1 spot as No. 16 Austen Childs downed No. 13 Spencer 6-3, 6-1. Georgia went back on top in the No. 6 spot as Dante Terenzio fell to Taboada 6-1, 6-2. The Cardinals continued to fight as Maksimcuk defeated the No. 25 ranked Garrapiz in the No. 2 spot 6-2, 6-2.
With the score even, the Bulldogs were able to go back on top as Calligari could not overcome Pieters as he fell 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 5 spot. In the No. 3 spot, Simon Childs got the score even as he took down the No. 48 ranked Doumbia 7-6, 6-4.
The match came down the No. 4 spot as Hall took on Bernstein. The two would trade the first two sets, sending it to three where Hall could not seal the win falling 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
