LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The No. 28 University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated No. 43 Maryland 5-2 Monday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The win keeps alive a string of 22 home victories for the Cards including a 9-0 record this season.
"I was proud of the way our doubles teams responded to new partners and places in the lineup," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Austen Childs and Robert Hall were their usual reliable selves in singles. I was happy with Alejandro getting off to a good start and clinching the match. Adam Donaldson was our player of the match for his contribution to today's win."
The Cards grabbed the first point by sweeping all three doubles matches. The duo Viktor Maksimcuk and Simon Childs defeated Maros Horny and Andy Magee 8-4 at No. 1. Austen Childs and Adam Donaldson teamed to beat Jesse Kiuru and Jan Surovic 8-5 at the three-spot. On court No. 2, Alejandro Calligari and Robert Hall completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory over Tommy Laine and John Collins.
Austen Childs, No. 16 in the ITA singles rankings quickly gave the Cards a 2-0 lead by beating No. 175 Maros Horny 6-1, 6-2 on court No. 1. Robert Hall's 7-5, 6-2 decision over Magee increased the lead to 3-0. Calligari clinched the win for the Cards at the No. 5 position by beating Laine 6-3, 6-3. After falling to Collins 6-1 in the first set Simon Childs came back to win the next two 6-3, 6-4 to claim the No. 3 spot.
Maryland got wins at Nos. 2 and 6. With the Cards leading 5-0 the Terps got their first point at the No. 6 spot where Kiuru defeated Andrew Carter 6-4, 3-6, 10-5. Maryland also picked up the final point of the match at the No. 2 position when Sergio Wyss defeated Maksimcuk 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
The Cardinals (10-9) will go back on the road to face No. 8 Georgia on March 23. "I still believe wholeheartedly in this team," said Ecarma. "We were one court short from getting several top 15 wins. To move up in our sport, you have to beat teams ahead of you, which is what we scheduled to do. We have one more big shot at a team, who if we win can give us a good position in the NCAA tournament."
