No. 13 Men's Tennis Falls to No. 3 Tennessee

The 13th ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team fell to third-ranked Tennessee 7-0 Monday at Goodfriend Tennis Center. It was the first loss of the season for the Cardinals who opened 2011 on a program-best eight match win streak.
"We did not play to our potential today," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We were not mentally strong enough when we were behind. Will learn from this and not let it affect our attempt to win the National Indoor Championship this weekend."
The Vols (6-0) started doubles matches on all three courts. Rhyne Williams and Tennys Sandgren picked up an 8-4 victory against Simon Childs and Andrew Carter on court two. Boris Conkic and John-Patrick Smith clinched the point beating Austen Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk 8-6 at the top of the lineup. Edward Jones and Matteo Fago edged Alejandro Calligari and Amaury Derognat 8-7 at No. 3 to close out the doubles matches.
In singles action Sandgren increased the lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Maksimcuk on court 3. Conkic followed suit on court five with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Carter to give the Vols a 3-0 lead.
Top-ranked Rhyne Williams clinched the team win by defeating eighth-ranked Austen Childs 6-3, 6-0. Fago, No. 38 in the ITA singles rankings, defeated Calligari 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5. Jones posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Dante Terenzio at No. 6. Louisville's Simon Childs defeated No. 21 John-Patrick Smith 6-2 in the first set, but fell 6-3 in the second. Smith prevailed 10-8 in a tiebreaker to close out the match.
The Cardinals (8-1) will travel to Seattle, Wash., for the ITA National Indoor Championships Feb. 18-21.
