LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville rowing program opened the fall by hosting the fifth annual Red & Black Day on Oct. 8 at the G. Garvin Brown III Rowing Center. For the fourth straight year, the event included several intra-squad scrimmage races, an alumnae race and concluded with a cookout for the rowers and coaches sponsored by Fisher's.
The event began with an introduction by Cardinals' head coach Laura Aubrey, welcoming parents, alumni and donors. Coach Aubrey also recognized last spring's BIG EAST winners, as well as the Cardinals' First Team and Second Team All-BIG EAST selections. She also recognized the U of L rowers with great academic and athletic achievements.
The racing, which got underway at approximately 2 p.m., consisted of five intra-squad match races and one alumnae race. The first race featured a sophomore crew defeating a junior crew in an 8+ boat, while the second matchup of the day had a freshmen crew defeating an alumnae crew by a boat-length in a 4+ boat race. Race number three had a pair of novice crews making their race debuts.
The fourth race of the afternoon was a 4+ boat race with a crew of U of L international rowers defeating a crew of the Cards' American rowers. The fifth race of the day had a crew of recruited Louisville rowers defeating a crew of U of L walk-ons in a 4+ boat race. And the final race of the event was a mixed race of two 8+ boats with both varsity and novice rowers on each crew.
"It was an awesome day, filled with fierce racing and beautiful weather," said Aubrey. "Since the Red and Black Scrimmage is our only home event, it was a great way to showcase U of L rowing to the community and show how hard our ladies are working. It was wonderful to see so many parents travel long distances to watch the regatta. We appreciate all of their support as well as the support of our donors and alumnae."
Following an hour of racing, the annual event ended with the cookout. Up next, the Cardinals will travel to Boston, Mass., for the Head of the Charles Regatta.
