
Women's Basketball Falls to Marquette 76-65

Milwaukee, Wis. - The Louisville women's basketball team fell to Marquette 76-65 on Wednesday night at the Al McGuire Center. Shoni Schimmel led the Cardinals with 25 points and Monique Reid finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Tatiyiana McMorris led Marquette with 21 points. The Cardinals fall to 13-8 on the year and 4-3 in BIG EAST play. Marquette improves to 16-4 overall and 4-3 in the BIG EAST.
The Cardinals got off to a slow start falling behind 12-0 to start the game. Schimmel hit a 3-pointer at the 16:51 mark to stop the drought. Her trey sparked an 8-0 Cardinal run to cut the lead to 12-8 with 15:05 left in the half. Louisville had cut the lead two (18-16) at the 12:10 mark. Marquette answered with at 12-2 run, taking a 30-17 lead. The Golden Eagles finished the half with a 38-26 lead.
Louisville finished the first half shooting 32.1 percent from the field and 25 percent from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles shot 66.7 percent from the field and behind the arc. Marquette held a slight 14-12 rebounding edge in the half.
The Cardinals came out better in the second half, starting the game with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 40-32 with 17 minutes remaining. Burke hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to get the Cards within five. Marquette answered with a 5-0 run to take a 45-35 lead at the 15:26 mark.
Schimmel and Becky Burke hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Cardinals a 6-2 run, cutting the lead to 48-41 with 13:28 remaining. Marquette then used a 10-4 run to take a 58-45 lead with eight minutes remaining. Reid got a steal and a layup to cut the lead to 11. Marquette scored on the next possession and Schimmel scores on a three point play with five minutes remaining to spark a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 60-54. Teams traded baskets and the Cardinals got as close as four but Marquette hit 12 free throws to end the game with a 76-65 win.
Louisville finished the game shooting 41.4 percent from the field and 30 percent from behind the arc. Marquette finished the game shooting 53.2 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from behind the arc. Marquette outrebounded the Cardinals 30-27.
The Cardinals will be back in action as they host Rutgers on Saturday Jan. 29 at 6:00 p.m. at the KFC Yum! Center. The game is a white out so all fans should wear white to white out the KFC Yum! Center.
