LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's cross country team has garnered national attention, receiving votes in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason coaches' poll, the New Orleans-based organization announced Tuesday.
"I consistently say that the only poll that really matters is the one on Tuesday morning after the national championships," head track and field coach Ron Mann says. "Certainly, to get some national recognition is a movement in the right direction. However, it's what happens on the field of play and where we go from this point forward. Our goal is to be a conference contender, a regional power and a strong national representative on a yearly basis, and we're moving toward that goal."
At the regional level, the men's team checked in at sixth in the southeast.
"We're busily preparing for the upcoming season, and we're excited about our early preseason rankings," head cross country coach Brice Allen adds. "This is a good starting point, but we want to build upon this."
On Saturday, Sept. 4, the Cardinal men and women will compete at Evansville's annual Mid-America Opener in Evansville, Ind. Last season at that event, the men and women finished first in their respective divisions. Individually, Matt Hughes finished first on the men's side, while Tarah McKay took first in the women's race.
The next USTFCCCA national poll will be released on Sept. 13.
