LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 15 ranked Louisville men's tennis team beat Middle Tennessee State 6-1 Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center to close out regular season play.
"Beating a good team like Middle Tennessee in our last regular season match helps us to build momentum" said Louisville head coach Rex Ecarma. "We have won five matches in a row and ended our second consecutive year undefeated at home. We want to thank our fans and UofL student athletes who came out here the day of Thunder over Louisville to support us."
Louisville started the match by taking the doubles point. Juniors Simon Childs and Alejandro Calligari teamed to beat John Peers and Kyle Wishing 8-3. Fellow juniors Austen Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk downed Richard Cowden and Shaun Waters 8-1.
Up 1-0, the Cards quickly added to the lead in singles play when Maksimcuk took his match point after his opponent Crowden retired because of an injury. Robert Hall added to the lead by beating Alex McCann 6-1, 6-0 at the six seed while Andrew Carter clinched the match by beating Kyle Wishing 6-2, 6-2 in the five slot. No. 20 Austen Childs beat No. 33 John Peers 6-4, 6-1 on the No. 1 court to make the score 5-0.
Middle Tennessee State got on the board when Shaun Waters beat Calligari in three sets 2-6, 7-5 (1-0) at No. 4. With the final point up for grabs, Louisville's Simon Childs battled through three sets to beat Matt Langley 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 in the three spot for the 6-1 win.
"Today was a great match and Austen Childs beat a great player in John Peers" said Ecarma, "but the MVP of today's match was Andrew Carter."
With the victory, the Cards improve to 19-5 on the season and remained unbeaten at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Blue Raiders drop to 5-19.
Next, the Cards will travel to South Bend, Ind. April 22-25 for the BIG EAST championship.
