No. 1 Louisville
Opening Comments:
Head Coach Ken Lolla - "First of all I want to congratulate UNC on a great season. They are a very good opponent and challenged us in a lot of different ways."
"It is exciting to be playing for the national championship. It is where we expected to be all season. We are excited at this point to be able to compete for it. For this group and this team, it's a goal we set at the beginning of the season. We polished each step every step of the way. I am very proud of this team because they faced a lot of adversity. This is the product of sowing seeds and we've reached the harvest of those seeds. We're very blessed to reach the harvest of everything we've worked hard to do."
"We started a little slow in the first half, played a little tentative. But we came out in the second half very aggressively and stepped up the tempo. We set up a lot of chances and were rewarded late in the game."
"I thought it was a very physical game. The referee's interpretation of the game I think was to just let them play. It didn't hurt us, but it didn't help us as well. Our guys are pretty resilient."
On the late goal by Aaron Horton:
"We're going to continue to wait until late to throw it in."
On the possibility of playing Akron for the national title (Lolla was head coach at Akron before moving to Louisville five years ago):
"It would mean we have to beat Akron. Caleb Porter has done a great job since taking over at Akron, but it doesn't make any difference who we face."
On how long the team gets to celebrate the win over North Carolina:
"That's it. It's done!"
On the TV timeouts: "Having those timeouts in the Big East Tournament helped. I told our players we're going to handle the timeouts (in the Big East Tournament) just like it's the Final Four. We played some big games in a huge venue. I give the Big East Conference thanks for setting up the timeouts. It helped us prepare for the national championship."
About tournament host UC Santa Barbara:
"We're in a beautiful place and UC Santa Barbara has done a great job of putting this on, but it's less to do with the surroundings and more to do with what we're playing for. Right now, it's all about recovery and getting ready for Sunday."
After the goal by NC:
Andre Boudreaux - "The goal was one of their few good chances to score. We have faith and the belief we could come back and get another goal."
On the team's defense:
Austin Berry - "We began the year setting our defense as a priority. We don't have to take many chances, our back line is solid and strong."
On the winning goal:
Aaron Horton - "Basically Ron was the one who made the play happen. He got the ball and started dribbling and took it out wide and slipped it through and I was able to put it away."
On playing in the title game:
Austin Berry - "It feels great, something coming into college you always dream of, to take home the trophy. We need to stay humble and hungry."
No. 4 North Carolina
Opening Statement:
Head Coach Elmar Bolowich - "Santa Barbara has done an outstanding job hosting this championship and we are happy to be here. We enjoyed being here. We wish the outcome of the game had been a little different as we had high hopes of heading back into the championship final and bringing back our second championship to North Carolina. But it wasn't meant to be and I want to congratulate Coach Ken Lola and the Louisville Cardinals for an outstanding game. They are a well-coached team. Ken is a Duke graduate who coached at Akron and did a wonderful job at Akron and is now building a top program at Louisville. They were a formidable opponent and we knew that. We played our hardest, but in the end they were a little more fortunate with their opportunities and came away with the win."
Assessing his team's performance in the second half:
Scott Goodwin - "Naturally we came out in the second half with more energy than we played in the first half. We responded well after getting scored on after their first goal, I think that just shows a lot about our team and how we have been battling back against teams all year. We definitely picked it up in the second half, unfortunately, it was not enough at the end of the day.
Discussing the last-minute nature of Louisville's game-winning goal:
Scott Goodwin - "It is a weird feeling because it is us getting that last minute goal, it's never fun to be on the other end of a situation like that. I am proud of the guys because they gave their full effort, you cannot ask for anything more."
