Post Game Quotes
Louisville Head Coach Jeff Walz
(On the game)
"I thought we did a really good job defensively making this a sloppy game. We knew they were a good team offensively. They've got a multitude of players who can shoot the three. Our goal was to try to make it as ugly as we could so they couldn't get into their offensive set. You follow the first two trips down the floor; they score back-to-back buckets because of their offense and the way they get things moving. We were able to score, which we thought we would be able to, and then come back and press them. I thought our press was outstanding tonight. I thought it really took a lot of time off the shot clock and forced them into some bad shots."
(On defending the three-point shot)
"We knew that they were a very good three-point shooting team. We knew we had to be prepared to defend the three-point line. We did a really nice job. I think they made one or two there in the last four or five minutes when the game is out of reach. To be able to defend when it matters is what you're trying to do."
(On forcing 31 turnovers)
"Again, that's what we tried to do today. We tried to get them to be sloppy with the basketball and we were very successful with it. Tia Gibbs played extremely well in the press. She had very active hands coming up with six steals. I thought Shoni (Schimmel) did a nice job defensively for us. All of our guards have to get better guarding the dribble drive, but she showed a very good job of having active hands. When someone is putting the ball in her face she'll slap it away. She came up with three or four big steals for us."
(On what sparked the 20-2 run in the first half)
"It was just our energy and our effort. I thought we came out and kept attacking. That's what we do. Shoni hit a few big shots too. I think one she hit in the first half opposite our bench up the court was about 23 or 24 feet. That's what she can do. Then she got some other players involved and did a nice job of sharing the basketball."
(On getting out-rebounded)
"That is something we have to improve on. We gave up 18 offensive rebounds and I'm willing to bet you five of them came from the free throw line. There is no excuse for that. We're going to have to start working harder on making sure we block out at the free throw line."
(On where team stands and preparing for BIG EAST play)
"I think we're doing a really good job. A 69-55 final, but they only had 44 points with six minutes left in the game. Defensively we're doing a really good job. If we can stop fouling people and giving up offensive rebounds at the free throw line we could have held them to 40 points and they are a very good offensive team. This is a team that has scored 100 twice; they dropped 91 on Minnesota at Minnesota. So we're doing a really good job."
(On Louisville's defense against Dayton)
"They are a very good team. They are going to win a lot of games. Our goal was to get them as confused and frustrated as we can. Of the 31 turnovers, I would say at least six or seven they just threw the ball straight out of bounds."
(On Las Vegas Tournament)
We've got a game with Cincinnati that we have to be prepared for first. We'll get down there Thursday and have plenty of time to practice. We've got four very competitive basketball games coming up in a row. We had six in a row starting with Kentucky and Dayton. I'm really pleased that we've won two of them, now we have to stay focused and take it one game at a time, starting with Cincinnati."
(On Asia Taylor)
"She is suspended indefinitely. It has nothing to do with basketball. She gives us great effort on the basketball court. There are just some expectations that come along with being part of our program and you've got to make sure that you live up to those expectations. Unfortunately she's not living up to those right now. Sure we like to win basketball games, but we want to win them the right way and have behavior off the court that we're just as proud of as the way we play on the court."
Louisville Player Quotes
Junior Forward Monique Reid
(On shutting down Dayton's offense)
"Well, one of the game plans was to be there on the catch and contain them. We know they like to get up and down the floor so everything was just to be there on the catch."
(On what the team needs to work on before BIG EAST play)
"Just little things, I feel like we've matured. If we play the way the way we did in the beginning of the season, we will beat a lot of good teams. But we're just going out everyday practicing hard. I feel like we're prepared, we can only go up from here."
(On the three teams the Cards will face in Las Vegas)
"Basically, Coach Walz is just to focus on the next game. He's not worried about three games ahead. He's just focusing on our next game which is Cincinnati. We start BIG EAST play which is big for us and we're really excited. Our freshmen are not freshmen anymore when we enter BIG EAST play."
(On Dayton defeating Cincinnati)
"It doesn't really mean anything. We have games like Kentucky and they're ranked No. 8 and we beat them by 26 points. It's just any given night, you have to play hard. I feel like as a team, if we play hard then we can beat a lot of good teams. So we're not overlooking Cincinnati, we just have to play hard."
(On focusing as a team early in the first half)
"With us, it's just about getting hyped before the games. We have our struggles as a team but we just have to pick each other up and we like to start the first half and the second half the exact same way. Coach Walz gives us energy and we just try to pick each other up. We need to get this straightened out before BIG EAST play."
Senior Center Keshia Hines
(On her focus for the game)
"I was struggling in the beginning, but every day I just try to come out hard and play the best that I can. It's my last year so I have to go big."
(Thoughts on practice after finals)
"I think we're just trying to get better and coming out every day. Even if we don't have practice we will still be in the gym working on our shots and make ourselves better as a team. That's exactly what we do. We're in the gym, after we finish up our stuff for finals because Coach Walz takes school just as seriously as basketball so we're doing both."
Freshman Guard Shoni Schimmel
(On what sparked the 20-2 run)
"I think it was just everyone working hard and going hard and just feeding off of each other. Everyone was hitting shots. We got a lot of transition shots too so that helped a lot."
