LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Ranked 29th nationally in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association poll, the University of Louisville men's cross country team will embark on the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships. The 10,000-meter race will take place on Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind., at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
The Cardinal men have continued to play a role on the national scene, returning to the national stage for the fourth time in the last five years. The squad achieved the highest finish in program history in 2007, taking ninth. Last season, the program registered a 23rd-place finish.
Louisville qualified for this year's national championships via one of 13 at-large bids. The Southeast Region had four teams - Louisville, NC State, Richmond and Virginia - earn at-large bids.
With the end of the season becoming the most crucial time period, the Cardinals recorded impressive finishes, taking a top-10 finish at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals, runner-up at the BIG EAST Championships and fifth at the competitive NCAA Southeast Regional in which three earned all-Region honors on Nov. 13. Michael Eaton has been Louisville's top-finisher of four its six races this year, including a runner-up finish at the league championships and a fourth-place showing at the regionals.
Heading into the event, the Cardinals have three runners - Eaton, Matt Hughes and Luke Lovelace - who have competed on the national stage prior to this season. Eaton was part of the 2007 and 2009 squads that posted top-25 finishes at the NCAA Championships, while Hughes and Lovelace competed at last year's race.
The first-place finisher will be crowned the 2010 champion, and the first 40 runners to cross the finish line will earn the distinction of USTFCCA All-Americans.
A live webcast of the championships will be broadcast from 12-1:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 22, on NCAA.com. Highlights from the championships will be included as part of the CBS NCAA Fall Seasonal Show scheduled to air on Dec. 18 from 11-1 p.m. on CBS HD.
Results from Monday's race and a full recap will be available on UofLsports.com following the conclusion of the event.
