LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete at the 2010 NCAA Southeast Regional on Saturday, Nov. 13, at E.P. `Tom' Sawyer State Park in Louisville. Schools competing at the race include teams from the states of Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The women's 6K begins the day at 10 a.m., with the men's 10K following at 11:15 a.m.
"We're excited to be co-hosting the 2010 NCAA Southeast Regional," cross country head coach Brice Allen says. "The course is in great condition, and the weather we're going to have is going to be superior. We're excited because it's a course we know very well."
The top-two finishing teams at each of the nine regionals automatically qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind. The remaining 13 teams on each side (men's and women's) will earn at-large bids, which will be selected by the NCAA Division I Track & Field Subcommittee. At-large teams will be considered based on their regional finish as well as their regular-season results. Final selections will be announced the evening of Sunday, Nov. 14.
The Cardinal men enter the race ranked No. 20 nationally by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association poll. In their last race, the squad finished runner-up at the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 30 in Jamesville, N.Y., with three - Michael Eaton (second), Matt Hughes (ninth) and Tyler Byrne (15th) - earning all-BIG EAST honors for their respective top-15 finishes.
Last season, Eaton took 16th at the regional, with Hughes finishing 32nd and Luke Lovelace placing 41st. Collectively, the men finished third behind William & Mary and NC State and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, where they placed 23rd.
Other notable teams in the men's race include NC State (ranked No. 16), the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) runner-up team, North Carolina, No. 18 nationally, William & Mary, No. 19 in the nation and the defending Southeast Region champion, and ACC powers Virginia and Duke, ranked 21st and 23rd nationally, respectively.
Behind the efforts of Emily Borsare (24th), Kim Grieshaber (43rd) and Monica Hernandez (48th), the Cardinal women had an eighth-place showing at the BIG EAST Championships. Borsare's finish was her second-best 6K showing this season. Prior to the league event, Grieshaber was the Cardinals' top-finisher in the first four races of the season.
At last year's regional, Borsare placed 30th, followed by Grieshaber (39th).
Other notable women's teams include ACC powers Virginia, the 2010 conference runner-up and currently ranked No. 12 in nation, and Duke, the defending regional champion and currently ranked No. 17 in the coaches' poll, along with North Carolina, currently ranked No. 21 nationally, and NC State, ranked 29th nationally.
