LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams will head to Jamesville, N.Y., for the 2010 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships, hosted by Syracuse University. The race, which takes place at Jamesville Beach Park, begins with the women's 6K at 10:30 a.m., followed by the men's 8K at 11:15 a.m.
"Coming off of a successful Pre-Nationals run, we're looking toward continuing to build momentum toward the national championships," head cross country coach Brice Allen says. "As always, we hope to be a conference contender, and we want to use this race as a building block as we move on to the Terre Haute for the national championships."
The Cardinal men, ranked 28th nationally in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's poll, are coming off a strong team performance after finishing 10th at the prestigious Indiana State Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 16. Matt Hughes led the team with a 12th-place showing, while Michael Eaton crossed the finish line in 31st place. True freshman Tyler Byrne had another impressive race and took 70th out of 231 runners.
In their other three races this season, the men have won one team title and tallied a pair of runner-up finishes.
On the women's side, the squad took 29th their last time out at the Pre-National Invitational. For the fourth-straight race, Kim Grieshaber was the group's top-finisher, taking 27th out of 274 runners. Emily Borsare was the Cardinals' second runner to complete the 6,000-meter course, finishing 63rd, followed by Monica Hernandez (171st) to round out the top three placewinners.
The Cardinal women also have won one team title through their three other races.
At last year's championship race, held at Wayne E. Dannehl Championship Course in Wisconsin, the men recorded a fourth-place finish, while the women took seventh. Two of the men's top five runners - Cory Thorne and Michael Eaton - earned all-BIG EAST honors (individual must finish in Top 15), with Tarah McKay being the only runner on the women's side to receive all-league honors.
