Louisville, Ky. - Yahoo!! We are Big East Red Division Regular Season Champs!!
Our last home game of the regular season was this past Wednesday against Cincinnati. It wasn't our best night but we manage to score early with a sweet goal by Simeon Steward. Less than a minute later Kenny Walker served a free kick into the box where Phil Edginton made a nice touch to Buck Tufty for the finish. In the second half, it was Big Daddy Matt Beverin receiving a cross by Kenney Walker for his first collegiate goal, and the teams third and final goal. Cheers to those that came off the bench gave us a lot of energy and scored goals we needed for the victory. With this win, we tied the record for the most regular season wins in Louisville history and finished the home schedule undefeated.
We were now in great spot to win the regular season outright. We knew what was on the line and we wanted to go out in fashion. Saturday's game at Villanova day was their senior night so we knew it was going to be a battle. Right from the start, Villanova could not match our intensity. We scored three goals in the first 30 minutes. JT Murray took a great first touch just outside the box and blasted his first goal of the year in the 9th minute. The second goal came off a rebound from a Colin Rolfe's shot and Mark Knight was there for the tap in. One minute later, Paolo DelPiccolo served a corner kick to yours truly for a header making it 3-0. The pressure didn't stop there. In the second half, Rolfe scored on a break away in the 55th minute. Although we were up 4-0, Villanova continued to fight and did not let down. And neither did we - in the 72nd minute Paolo had his third assist of the game serving my second header of game. 5-0 Game Over! We are Big East Regular Season Champions.
As the final whistle blew, the bench cleared and we all ran to Andre to celebrate his shutout. This is the first time in Louisville history we have won the regular season. We broke the school record for the most wins, 13. On top of winning, Andre and the defense now have 12 shutouts for the season. Well done boys. We know that this is not the finish and we continue to take aim on a National Championship. Next we have the Big East Tournament. Join us next Saturday.
I hope all had a Happy Halloween. We always seem to have a game on Halloween. The plane was to arrive in Louisville at 8:30. This would be the first time in my four years that I would be able to celebrate. The night could not have been more perfect going home with a win and being home early. But no, the weather delayed our flight for 2 hours and when the plane landed it had two flat tires. Waiting in the airport, there was nothing better to do but to eat ice cream and discuss costume ideas. It was then that I decided I was going to be Dash from the Incredibles. The plane didn't land until 12:30, but still that left plenty of time to celebrate.
I am proud of all of my teammates for their hard work this season. Therefore everyone gets a shot out this week; Zach Torp, Matt Beverin, Nick Corliss, Travis Bally, Phil Edginton, OT Yanez, Luis Pacheco, Colin Rolfe, Gerry Chavez, Brent Rosendall, Chase Rodgers, Josh Lipka, Mark Knight, Jimmy Crick, Simeon Steward, Kenney Walker, Ryan Smith, Zach Hernan, Chase Kreger, Paolo DelPiccolo, JT Murray, Austin Berry, Joey Haught, Buck Tufty, Beau Diaz, David Stockum and Andre Boudreaux.
