GUELPH, Ontario - Tarah McKay qualified to represent Canada at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships following a runner-up finish at Saturday's AGSI Canadian Cross Country Championships held at the University of Guelph Arboretum in Guelph, Ontario.
"I thought McKay did great today and I cannot say enough about all that she has accomplished this year," said U of L head coach Brice Allen. "I felt she improved on her performance from the NCAA Championships and really did a good job out on the course."
After a short week of rest, McKay covered the 7,000-meter course in 25:22.9, just three seconds behind Stephanie Hood who won the women's senior race with a time of 25:19.9.
"I felt McKay ran well with the limited time she had to prepare and now she has the opportunity to represent her country at the World Championships," said Allen.
McKay, a junior from St. Clements, Ontario, can add to her list of accolades which includes a 72nd place finish at the NCAA Championships on Nov. 24, two individual titles, Mid-America Opener and Navy Invitational, and a runner-up finish at the Greater Louisville Classic. She also earned her third consecutive All-BIG EAST and All-Region performer honors after placing 10th and fifth at the BIG EAST Championships and NCAA Regionals, respectively.
McKay will decide within the next 48 hours whether she will compete on Saturday, March 28 at the 37th IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Amman, Jordan.
