Men's Tennis Defeats Marquette 6-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team improved its record to 4-0 with a 6-1 win over BIG EAST opponent Marquette Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Golden Eagles fall to 2-2 on the season.
"I thought our team responded well to its first Big East challenge," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Marquette is one of the top four teams in the league and can beat any Big East team on any given day. Our team raised their overall level of play today and they are developing nicely. Some of our players haven't even dropped a set this season. I feel we moved from second to third gear. Three matches in 48 hours was a difficult test for our team and they responded like straight `A' students."
In doubles action, the freshman duo of Austen Childs and Simon Childs defeated Brett Binkley and Mark Rutherford 8-5 at the top seed. Marquette's Stephen Shao and Pete Van Lieshout responded with an 8-5 win over sophomores David Simon and Kenneth Nordheim at No. 2. Junior Robert Rotaru and senior Pablo Camacho clinched the doubles point for the Cards with an 8-6 victory over Trent Hagan and Dusan Medan at the three-spot.
U of L picked up straight-set singles wins at Nos. 1,2,3,4 and 6. Austen Childs defeated Medan 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1. Simon topped Hagan 6-2, 6-3 at the two-spot. Simon Childs registered a 7-6, 6-2 win over Shao at No. 3. Freshman Viktor Maksimcuk beat Boulieris 6-4, 6-1 at the four-seed and Nordheim defeated Binkley 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6.
Marquette's lone point came at the No. 5 seed, where Rutherford defeated Rotaru 6-4, 7-6.
The Cardinals are back in action with a doubleheader on Feb. 1. Western Kentucky will visit the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center at noon, with Dayton arriving for a 6 p.m. matchup.
