LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Murray State 7-0 Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The win was the second of a doubleheader in which the Cards also beat Morehead State 7-0. U of L (3-0) will play its fourth straight home match Sunday at 1 p.m. against Marquette.
"I thought the team did a good job tonight," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They didn't try to make ESPN SportsCenter, but played high percentage tennis. They did what good teams do - get up quickly and finish decisively. When I previewed this match, I felt the returning players were prepared to show well and every single one of them did. I'm very proud."
The Cardinals opened the match by sweeping the doubles point. Sophomores David Simon and Kenneth Nordheim teamed beat Chris Horton and Hunter Gerlach 8-4 at No. 1. Freshman Austen Childs and sophomore Ben Clos edged Nick Ksiezopolski and Yuri Pompeu 8-7 at the two-spot. senior Pablo Camacho and junior Robert Rotaru defeated Jadir Junior and Adam Perry 8-1 at No. 3.
In singles action, Austen Childs picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Pompeu at the top seed. Simon defeated Gerlach 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Freshman Viktor Maksimcuk topped Ksiezopolski 6-3, 6-1 at the three-spot, while Rotaru registered a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Horton at No. 4. Freshman Alejandro Calligari defeated Junior 6-3, 6-2 at the five-spot. Sophomore Ben Clos closed the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Mike Headford at No. 6.
