Men's Tennis Rolls Past Northwestern 6-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team opened the 2008 season with a 6-1 win over visiting Northwestern Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards start the season 1-0, while Northwestern drops to 2-1.
"You could tell this was our first match," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Northwestern put forth great effort and could very well have defeated us. It is evident that this team is very young, but talented. I could see the tightness as they played and got into some very close matches. I believe our talent pulled us through. Hopefully in our next match, we can play more relaxed and be at the top of our game."
The Cards swept the doubles matches to start the contest 1-0. The freshman team of Austen Childs and Simon Childs defeated Northwestern's Alex Sanborn and Marc Dwyer 8-5 at the top seed. Sophomores David Simon and Kenneth Nordheim picked up an 8-5 win over Peter Rispoli and Alexander Thams at No. 2. Senior Pablo Camacho and freshman Alejandro Calligari teamed to beat Northwestern's David Seyferth and Juan Gomez 8-6 at the three-spot.
U of L picked up singles wins at Nos. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. At the top seed, Austen Childs beat Thams 6-2 in the first set got the win after Thams retired with the score 1-1 in the second set. Simon Childs outlasted Dwyer 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 (12-10) at No. 2. David Simon edged Rispoli 7-6, 7-6 at No. 3. Freshman Viktor Maksimcuk posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Gomez at the five-spot. Junior Robert Rotaru defeated Seyferth 7-5, 7-5.
Sanborn posted Northwestern's lone point with a 6-3, 6-3 win over sophomore Tye Myers.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday, Jan. 25, when they face Morehead State at noon and Murray State at 6 p.m. in a doubleheader at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
