LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's basketball team will host No. 1 Connecticut in Freedom Hall on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 4:00 p.m. The game will be televised live on BIG EAST TV and locally on WHAS-TV.
Junior Angel McCoughtry leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 23.1 points and 85. rebounds per game. Candyce Bingham is second on the team in scoring and rebounding with 14.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Senior point guard Patrika Barlow leads the team and the league in assists with 7.3 per game.
Connecticut enters the game as the only undefeated team in the nation. The Huskies have compiled a perfect 14-0 overall record and a 2-0 record in BIG EAST play. UConn has three players averaging double figures. Freshman Maya Moore leads the team in scoring with 16.1 points per game. Sophomore Tina Charles is second on the team with 14.3 points per game and also leads the team in rebounding with 9.9 boards per game. Mel Thomas rounds out the top scorers with 10.1 points per game.
Saturday's game will be the fifth meeting between the two teams. Connecticut leads the series 3-1. Since joining the BIG EAST two seasons ago the Huskies have dominated the series with a 3-0 record against the Cardinals. Last season the Huskies handed the Cardinals two of their worst defeats. In a regular season matchup in Storrs, the Huskies topped the Cardinals 84-56 and then in the BIG EAST semifinals they handed the Cardinals a 76-50 defeat. The Cards' only win against the Huskies was a narrow 74-71 win in Storrs during the first round of the 1993 NCAA Tournament. The last time the two teams met in Freedom Hall, Connecticut defeated the Cards 75-68, making it the closest the Cardinals have been to the Huskies in BIG EAST play.
