Virginia Tech Tops Men's Tennis 6-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. - - The No. 48-ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 51 Virginia Tech 6-1 Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. The No. 51 Hokies improve to 7-1 on the year while the Cardinals fall to 5-6.
Tech swept the doubles matches to take the first point of the match. Brandon Corace and Arvid Puranen took the No. 3 match, 8-2, over Ben Clos and Pablo Camacho, while Nicolas Delgado and Pedro Graber clinched the point with a narrow 9-7 decision over Slavko Radman and David Simon at No. 1. Albert Larregola and Alexei Sergeev completed the doubles sweep, beating Chris Herrlinger and Damar Johnson 8-2 at the two-spot.
In singles action, No. 70-ranked Larregola gave the Hokies a 2-0 lead with his 7-6, 6-1 win over Simon at No. 3. Graber defeated Horatiu Oltean 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 to make it a 3-0 match.
The Cardinals got on the board with a victory at No. 2 as Damar Johnson defeated 87th-ranked Delgado, 6-4, 6-4, but the Hokies clinched the match at No. 5 when Corace beat Kenneth Nordheim, 6-4, 6-4. In the No. 1 contest, Puranen, ranked No. 67, topped 71st-ranked Slavko Radman, 6-3, 6-2. Yoann Re edged Robert Rotaru at No. 4, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (6) to close the 6-1 win for the Hokies.
"Good teams have to learn to win on the road and obviously, we're not there yet," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We'll be on the road almost exclusively until April, so we'll make adjustments in our lineup and put the best competitors out there. We'll continue to fight and expect good things to happen."
The Cards (5-6) will face No. 65 Brown University Saturday at 12:00 at Burrow-Burleson Tennis Center on Virginia Tech's campus.
