BLACKSBURG, Va.- - The No. 48-ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated No. 65 Brown 4-3 Saturday at Virginia Tech's Burrows-Burleson. Louisville improves to 6-6 on the season, Brown falls to 8-2.
"Our top four players: Slavko Radman, Damar Johnson, Robert Rotaru and David Simon really played determined tennis today," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. " They decided that they were going to pull Cardinal tennis to a victory and won in straight sets. I'm proud that they didn't get down on this road swing we've been on since February. They really helped us bounce back."
The Bears went ahead early by sweeping the doubles matches to take the first point. Brown's 25th ranked duo of Dan Hanegby and Chris Lee edged Louisville's Slavko Radman and David Simon 8-7 at the top seed. The Bears won another tight one at No. 2 as Eric Thomas and Basu Ratman outlasted Damar Johnson and Chris Herrlinger 9-7 at the two-spot. Sabrach Kholi and Zack Pasanen teamed for an 8-5 win over Ben Clos and Robert Rotaru at No. 3.
In singles, the Cards won in straight sets at the top four spots for the 4-3 win. Radman, No. 71 in the ITA singles ranking, defeated No. 82 Hanegby 6-3, 6-1. Johnson rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Thomas at the two-spot. Rotaru's 6-4, 6-3 win over Kholi at No. 3 proved to be the match winner. Simon registered a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Ratnam at No. 4.
"Robert Rotaru played a nice game in the clinching match," said Ecarma. "The broke his opponent with four winners - he's getting better and better as the season progresses."
Brown's singles wins came at Nos. 5 and 6. Pasanen topped Kenneth Nordheim 6-2, 6-2 and Lee defeated Herrlinger 6-4, 6-3.
